# Ask Your Docs > Ask questions about your own PDF, Word (.docx), text and Markdown files and get answers in which every sentence cites the passage it came from. Click a citation to read the passage with the quoted words highlighted. No API key needed: each question is paid per run with SkillSafe credits. Documents are parsed and searched in the browser and never uploaded; only the few passages that match the question are sent. URL: https://ask-your-docs.skillsafe.ai/ API: https://ask-your-docs.skillsafe.ai/api.html ## What it does - Reads PDF (text layer), DOCX, TXT, Markdown, CSV and HTML files in the browser, several at once, or pasted text. - Splits them into paragraph-aligned passages (about 900 characters) that remember file, page and heading. - Ranks passages for each question with BM25 keyword search in the browser. Libraries under about 3,000 characters are sent whole. - Shows exactly which passages will be sent before you ask. - The model (SkillSafe gpt-terra tier) answers only from those passages. Each factual sentence carries a citation tag, and each cited passage gets a verbatim quote. - The page checks every citation and quote: a tag naming a passage that was not sent is flagged unsupported, a sentence with no tag is marked uncited, and each quote is searched in its passage and marked verified, close or not found. - Answers say "answered", "partly answered" or "not in your documents". A question the documents do not cover is reported as such, not guessed. - Follow-up questions reuse the last three turns to resolve "it" and "that"; follow-up searches also borrow the previous question's terms. - Export: copy an answer or the whole chat as Markdown with footnote citations, or download it as .md. - Signed-in chats are saved to the account (questions, answers and the passages sent); documents themselves are never stored. ## Price Free to open and to try with the built-in sample documents (sample answers replay at no cost). A question on your own files is one metered run: the page shows the reserve before you ask and the actual charge after; a short answer typically costs a few cents or less. ## Limits - Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be searched; run OCR first. - Keyword retrieval can miss a passage that uses different words from the question; the page shows what was matched so you can rephrase. - Answers can still be wrong. Open the cited passage before relying on one.
